About Joe
When he’s not strolling through the Irish Channel with his wife Abby and beloved Husky, Kita, Joe Gerrity is the managing broker and co-owner of budding New Orleans real estate firm, Satsuma Realtors, formerly known as Korman Gerrity Real Estate. Based out of their chic Magazine Street office, Joe is an industry veteran with 15 years of experience and tens of millions of dollars of successful real estate acquisitions under his belt.
Joe was born in the Golden State of California and raised in upstate New York. His passion for real estate began after Hurricane Katrina; witnessing firsthand the devastation of his adopted and beloved city, he set out to rebuild flood-damaged properties, all while studying at Tulane University.
Joe is a dynamic, hardworking and successful entrepreneur who lives life to the fullest. His enthusiasm is evident in all aspects of his life, and his big plans for Satsuma Real Estate have only just begun. (He’ll even throw in a Satsuma tree at closing!)

Your commitment to rebuilding New Orleans was just the beginning of a successful career in real estate and a very active involvement in your local community. Tell us about that. |

My experience dealing with real estate in the aftermath of Katrina really led me into being a broker and gain interest in general entrepreneurship. I’ve volunteered with the Special Olympics, helped out at The Green Project, participate in a handful of festive local fundraisers, and organize Crawfish, Beers, and Cheers, which will soon overtake all others for the largest fundraiser in the city — at least that’s the plan! |

What area of real estate are you most passionate about? |
A |
I love helping people find their primary residence, especially first-time homebuyers. I also think passive income enables people to live their best life, and as such it’s a real joy to help people locate, purchase and if necessary, renovate a property to ensure it’s producing income for years to come. |

What is your favorite architectural style? |
A |
Frankly, so long as you don’t have walk-through bedrooms and it isn’t too modern or cookie-cutter, I don’t have a big preference in terms of architecture. I love big yards, private spaces, and for the most part, old houses. |

Like so many, you came to New Orleans for one reason or another and never left! What do you like to do in your spare time and where’s the best place to grab a bite? |

Haiku Sushi is my all-time favorite for lunch, and right now I’m loving Gris Gris for dinner. The food in this city is so good that there’s no real reason to be picky. I really enjoy sports — and there are so many great options here — but unfortunately, I’ve been hobbled in recent years by injuries. I still play a fair bit of golf, softball, tennis, and volleyball. Being a New Orleanian, I obviously love the Saints, but I think I’m equally fond of the Pelicans, who I spent a few years covering for a combination of ESPN and Bourbon Street Shots. |

What advice you would give anyone looking to buy a home in NOLA? |

Here are three pieces: Use an experienced Realtor. Start going to open houses six months before you even consider buying to learn more about the market without feeling a sense of pressure, either internal or external, to buy. And finally, don’t get hung up on paint colors, specific fixtures, or really anything that can be easily changed. |
