The Pontchartrain Center, along the beautiful shores of Lake Pontchartrain, is the second-largest convention center in the New Orleans metro area. The center has over 70,000 square feet of space and the capacity to seat 4,600 people.
Rivertown is Kenner’s pride and joy and a popular destination for visitors and students on field trips. Located where Williams Boulevard meets the Mississippi River, the 16-block historic district includes Heritage Park, the Rivertown Theaters for the Performing Arts, the Rivertown Space Science Complex, and the Kenner Planetarium and MegaDome Cinema.
Family-friendly annual events in Rivertown include the Italian Heritage Festival and the Krewe of Isis Mardi Gras parade. But there’s plenty to do all year long.
Kenner City Park Pavilion is a picturesque spot on the Lake Pontchartrain shore complete with green space and playground equipment, perfect for picnics and celebrating special occasions.
Williams Boulevard is an international culinary haven for affordable and authentic food. Within a few-block radius, you can find restaurants serving cuisines from around the world: Brazilian, Honduran, Middle Eastern, Asian, Cuban. There’s even an Eastern European grocery store.
History of Kenner
The area that is now Kenner was originally inhabited by the Tchoupitoulas Indians. French explorer René-Robert Cavalier landed there in 1682, and in 1718 the French gave it the name of Cannes Brûlées (“burnt canes”). Kenner was established in 1855 by members of the Kenner family, who operated several plantations.
All land to the north (where Airline Highway is now) was once swampland. The growth of Kenner has been propelled by development of the swampland in the late 1950s, the construction of Interstate 10 in the 1960s, and improvements in Veterans Memorial Highway.
Today, Kenner is a thriving city with many amenities, bustling commercial activity, easy access to natural beauty, and an abundance of residential developments.
