And so it begins. Today, we kick off the beginning of carnival season by taking you through a guide of the best king cakes in the city, neighborhood by neighborhood. Mardi Gras 2021 will be different from years past, but we can always count on king cakes to be consistent (and delicious).
Bywater – Bywater Bakery
Located at 3624 Dauphine Street is a laidback spot specializing in food, coffee, and delicious pastries, including their phenomenal king cakes. This year, they have eight sweet flavors and three exciting savory flavors. You can pre-order your king cake on their website. Pro tip: they’re offering shipping for the first time!
French Quarter – Brennan’s
Everyone knows Brennan’s as a classic New Orleans culinary institution, but this year (for the first time!) Brennan’s is offering three flavors of king cakes. Traditional king cakes are available, as are new creations such as the ‘Pink Parade’, a strawberry cream cheese delight, and a chocolate ‘Black and Gold’ creation. These fantastic options are available to ship nationwide. Pro tip: Brennan’s is also giving away a king cake via @neworleanstidbits on Instagram! Head over to their page to enter!
Lakeview – Manny Randazzo King Cakes
If you were born and raised in New Orleans, chances are you ate a Randazzo’s king cake for breakfast before school most of your childhood during Mardi Gras. Put simply, they’re a classic for a reason, but get there early — this place draws significant crowds during carnival season. Pro tip: Randazzo king cakes are stocked at several local grocery stores, so do some digging and see if you can easily pick one up!
Garden District – Sucre
From Gracious Bakery to Haydels, there are tons of fantastic king cake options in the Garden District, but we wanted to shout-out the recently reopened Sucre. They offer gorgeous, shiny king cakes fit for, well, a king — they’d make the perfect gift for anyone this season. Pro tip: Be sure to ask for Sucre’s famous macaroons in king cake flavor!
Broadmoor – Laurel Street Bakery
LSB is an adorable neighborhood bakery with delicious pastries and food. They have phenomenal king cakes that you can order in-person, online, or through the phone. We also HIGHLY recommend their bagel breakfast sandwiches; a Satsuma team favorite. Pro tip: this Broadmoor spot is the only place on our list that offers delivery through Postmates!
Uptown – La Boulangerie
La Boulangerie is one of our Magazine Street neighbors, and a favorite spot for the Satsuma team! With New Orleans style King Cakes, and French-style Galette des Roisand, this beloved bakery also offers fun creations like a pretzel-flavored king cake. They come in a regular and mini size cake. You can call ahead or visit their website to order. Pro tip: while you’re there, pick up one of their famous buttery croissants!
